Worms for a Term

New York City transports its waste to New Jersey and beyond, releasing more than 250 thousand metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year1. Almost 40% of NYC's total waste is organic2 -the largest single category in our waste stream.

In 2007, Ariel Zucker of the Columbia EcoReps was feeling frustrated by all the banana peels in her kitchen trash. So she applied for a grant from Americans for Informed Democracy to start a residential composting project at Columbia, and Worms for a Term was born.

Now, we provide interested students with a worm bin, worms, and training so that they can start composting kitchen scraps and reduce your carbon footprint. If you're interested in participating, click here to email go.green.columbia@gmail.com with "worms" as the subject line.

And don't worry, we'll take back the bins and worms once the term is over.
